Use Sturdy Boxes and Storage Totes
Strong, similar-sized boxes are much easier to stack than mismatched containers. Plastic storage totes can also be a great option for items you're storing longer term.Place heavier boxes on the bottom and lighter boxes on top. Avoid making boxes so heavy that they're difficult to safely move.A good rule to remember: heavy items go in smaller boxes, and lightweight items can go in larger boxes.
Label Everything
Clearly labeling your boxes can save you a lot of time later.Instead of writing something general like "Kitchen," be more specific:

- Garage – Tools
Label more than one side of each box so you can identify what's inside even when boxes are stacked.
Protect Your Furniture

Pack Fragile Items Carefully
Wrap dishes, glassware, mirrors, artwork, and other breakable belongings with packing paper, bubble wrap, or another protective material.Fill empty spaces inside boxes so items don't shift around, and clearly mark these boxes FRAGILE.Avoid stacking heavy boxes on top of fragile items.
Keep Frequently Used Items Near the Front
Think ahead about what you may need while your belongings are in storage.Seasonal decorations, sporting equipment, business supplies, tools, or children's belongings may need to be accessed periodically. Keep these toward the front of your unit.Items you don't expect to need until you completely empty the unit can go toward the back.
Make a Simple Inventory
Once your unit is organized, take a few photos and make a quick inventory on your phone.You don't need to list every item. Simple notes like "Christmas decorations – back left" or "Kids' clothes – front shelf" can make finding something much easier months later.
